Bad Langensalza (dpa/th) – Four people were seriously injured in a head-on collision between two cars on federal highway 247 in the Unstrut-Hainich district on Thursday. A 27-year-old driver told police he fell asleep and swerved into oncoming traffic, a police spokeswoman said on Friday. There he collided head-on with the car of a 70-year-old. The woman was taken to the hospital by rescue helicopter with serious injuries. The 27-year-old and his two 53- and 33-year-old passengers were also seriously injured and taken to a clinic.

The statement by the 27-year-old that he had fallen asleep must now be checked, the spokeswoman said. The police confiscated the man’s driver’s license. The man is now being investigated for endangering road traffic and negligent bodily harm.
