Honduran President Xiomara Castro (left) decreed a curfew on Sunday in the city of Choloma (north) where eleven people were massacred the day before by contract killers recruited by drug traffickers.
From Sunday is imposed “a special curfew in Choloma, from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.”, announced the president on her Twitter account.
This decision was taken after eleven people were riddled with bullets in a billiard hall in the city of just under 300,000 inhabitants, on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula, the large industrial city in the north of the country.
Measures have been taken in Choloma and San Pedro Sula, “to provide security in the face of the brutal and ruthless terrorist attack (…) by contract killers trained and commanded by the godfathers of the drug trade who operate with impunity in the Sula Valley drug corridor,” Castro added.
“Ten men and one woman” were the victims of the massacre, police spokesman Commissioner Miguel Martinez told AFP.
Witnesses posted images on social media showing the bodies of the victims lying in pools of blood on the floor of a pool hall.
According to these witnesses, unknown persons armed with automatic weapons burst into the room where a birthday party was celebrated and fired.
The massacre came five days after 48 inmates were killed in clashes between rival gangs at a women’s prison near the capital.
According to authorities, prisoners from the “mara” (criminal gang) Barrio 18 burst into the neighborhood where their rivals from the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) were being held and fired heavy weapons before setting fire to the building.
