A well-known former politician in India and his brother are shot and killed on camera

A well-known former politician, accused of murder and who has already faced justice for cases related to mafia activities, and his brother, have been shot dead in front of the cameras while they went to a medical center escorted by the police in the North India.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, both under arrest for an alleged murder case, were walking handcuffed by police last night to a health center in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh state, when a group of assailants began shooting at them at point-blank range.

“The police got them out of the car and took them for a medical check-up. Just after entering the medical compound, shots were heard (…) they were shot,” Atiq Ahmed’s lawyer, Vijay Mishra, told the press.

The former Indian politician and mobster was interacting with the press at the time of the event, which was recorded in front of the cameras and whose images instantly went viral on social networks.

Police have so far identified three suspected attackers, who were also caught on media cameras posing as journalists to carry out the murder.

One of the parents of the alleged attackers told the press this Sunday that he found out about his son’s participation through the media and that he barely has contact with him.

What happened has led the head of the Government of Uttar Presdesh, Adityanath Yogi, to convene a high-level meeting to study the security situation in the state and instruct the agents to remain on high alert.

The state police, for their part, are facing criticism over the manner in which the murder of Ahmed and his brother, who were in their custody, was committed.

Ahmed accumulates a hundred criminal cases against him, including assault and murder, and his popularity reached notoriety in the 90s, when he began a political career that led him to occupy a seat in the Lower House of the Indian Parliament or Lok Sabha. .
