Members of the AfD Baden-Württemberg meet in Offenburg at the weekend. Resistance is stirring in the Baden city. The municipality is already warning citizens of traffic delays.

Offenburg (dpa / lsw) – At least two demonstrations are planned for this Saturday in Offenburg, Baden, at the start of the state party conference of the AfD. According to the registration, around 1,000 people will take to the streets at the protest of the “Stand up against racism Offenburg” alliance, as the city reported.

In addition, there should be another demonstration by another organizer with around 100 participants. The city warned that the protests could lead to traffic delays and disruptions to bus traffic.

For the AfD in Baden-Württemberg it is the second party congress within eight months. At the two-day meeting in the Oberrheinhalle, members are asked, among other things, to discuss changes to the statutes.

In addition, there will be many resolutions, including on the topics of family, property tax, migration and the Ukraine war, said Co-Chairman Markus Frohnmaier on request. He leads the association in a dual leadership with the member of parliament Emil Sänze. In July last year there was the provisionally last party conference in Stuttgart.

Since July, the AfD state association has also been observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a suspected right-wing extremist. The secret service can thus examine the right-wing populists more closely and, under strict conditions, observe members, monitor phones and recruit informants.

The party meeting in Offenburg has long led to debates. Mayor Marco Steffens (CDU) said in January that he did not share many of the AfD’s views. But the party can rent the Oberrheinhalle from the Offenburg-Ortenau trade fair, because the AfD has a legal right to transfer.

At the last party conference in July, Frohnmaier and Sänze announced that they wanted the divided state association to be united. At the time, the Südwest-AfD presented itself as deeply divided – between moderate-conservative members and the völkisch-national camp. In the state elections in the year before last, the AfD suffered heavy losses in the south-west. She landed at 9.7 percent – a minus of 5.4 points.
