Baden-Württemberg: Ravensburg Rutenfest: parade and first drummers group

After a two-year Corona break, thousands of schoolchildren and adults will parade through Ravensburg again on Monday at the highlight of the Rutenfest – this year with a group as a novelty.

Ravensburg (dpa/lsw) – This morning (9:00 a.m.) thousands of schoolchildren and adults are again presenting the history of Ravensburg in a traditional parade at the traditional Rod Festival. The event is a highlight of the multi-day festival, which is celebrated every year just before the summer holidays – unless the corona pandemic prevents celebrations, as it has in the past two years.

The home festival goes back to an old custom that doesn’t really sound pleasant, at least for schoolchildren: In the 15th century, teachers would take the children into the countryside to cut rods for their punishment. According to the festival commission, it is not known when these dodges, which probably did not bring much joy to the students, became a happy city festival.

An important part of the parade is formed by the so-called rod drummers, whose groups have so far mostly been dominated by men. This year, the “Turmfalken” will be a pure female drummer group for the first time. According to the city, more than 40,000 spectators are expected at the pageant.
