Baden-Württemberg: "Schmotziger Dunschtig" at carnival in the southwest

Colorful parades and many fools’ meetings have been determining the Fasnet programs in the communities for weeks. Now the climax is approaching.

Tettnang (dpa/lsw) – On Thursday, which is known nationwide as Altweiberfastnacht, the Swabian-Alemannic carnival begins its hot phase. It always starts early as a day of exuberance with lots of noise and loud music in the strongholds: In Constance, the “Blätzlebuebe” and other groups traditionally parade through the streets at 6 a.m. to wake up the residents. In many communities, students are being expelled from class and town halls are being stormed. In the evening (5:00 p.m.) things get dead serious in Stockach (district of Konstanz): FDP politician Wolfgang Kubicki sits in the “dock” before the “Court of Fools”.

For the fools in the southwest, the celebration day is called “Schmotziger Dunschtig” or “Gumpiger” Thursday. The largest parades in the Ländle are then on Shrove Monday. The whole spectacle ends on Ash Wednesday and the Häs – as the fool’s costume is also called – disappears into the closet until next year.
