Baden-Württemberg: Suspect for knife attack on pastor in custody

Ulm (dpa / lsw) – The judiciary has taken a 28-year-old into custody who is said to have attacked a pastor with a knife in Ulm Minster. As the public prosecutor and the police jointly announced on Monday, the incident occurred during a church service on Sunday morning. The 39-year-old pastor was unharmed. The background of the attack initially remained open.

In the church, the man is said to have damaged six wooden figures on the pews with a knife. Then he went up to the pastor – from about a meter away he is said to have pushed the knife in her direction several times. The woman therefore dodged backwards and called on the microphone for help from churchgoers.

The suspect is also accused of cutting the speaker cable. He then left the church – later he was arrested by officials on the Münsterplatz.

The man is suspected of attempted murder. The public prosecutor’s office will also have the 28-year-old’s mental state assessed as part of the ongoing investigation.
