Bavaria: Mayor about the Olympics in Munich: A city not up to date

Munich (dpa / lby) – Munich’s Mayor Dieter Reiter considers the application of individual cities to host the Olympic Games to be outdated. Modern games need to take sustainability seriously. “Munich has a lot to offer here, as the European Championships last summer demonstrated very impressively. That’s why I’ve been in good talks with the German Olympic Sports Confederation over the past few months, which is planning the future of the Olympic Games in the association from three or four cities,” said the SPD politician on Monday.

A series of German applications have been unsuccessful since 1986, also because the citizens were against it – for example when trying to host the 2022 Winter Games with Munich and the 2024 Summer Games with Hamburg. The last Olympic Games in Germany were held in Munich in 1972.

Bavaria’s Sports and Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) emphasized on Monday that an Olympic bid must first be discussed at federal level between politicians and sports organizations. “It’s important that Germany deals with the issue, but it’s not like we’re pushing ahead from Bavaria at the moment.”
