Denmark: Queen resumes official activities after surgery

After her back operation at the end of February, the Queen of Denmark Margrethe II resumed her official activities on Sunday, with a public appearance on the occasion of her 83rd birthday.

Accompanied by the royal family, the Queen waved to the crowd from the balcony of her Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. “Long life to Denmark”, launched the sovereign to the large crowd gathered in front of the palace.

According to Danish media, it was the first time the royal family has appeared publicly in full since the Queen stripped the princely titles of the four children of Prince Joachim, her youngest son.

The latter had publicly expressed his bitterness after the decision of his mother, who had apologized, but without going back on her decision.

Widowed since 2018, this polyglot intellectual has contributed to gradually modernizing the monarchy. Now the last queen to reign in Europe, she is extremely popular. More than 80% of Danes call themselves monarchists and they turned out by the thousands to celebrate his 50-year jubilee of rule last year.

In February, the court announced that the queen was to “undergo major surgery” due to back problems and that her heir son, Prince Frederik, would take over as regency.

The palace had clarified that a number of events on its official schedule would be postponed, canceled or taken over by other members of the royal family as a result of its operation.
