EUROPE Orban accuses the US of pressuring Hungary to get involved in the war in Ukraine

The United States wants Hungary to get involved in the war in Ukraine, the Hungarian Prime Minister, the ultra-nationalist Viktor Orban, assured today, who at the same time said that Washington is a friend and ally. “The United States has not given up wanting to involve Hungary in the (Ukrainian) war,” the president said in statements to Kossuth public radio, anticipating that Budapest will not let that happen, and reiterating that it will continue without sending weapons to Ukraine.

However, the prime minister affirmed that the North American country is a “friend” and “important ally” of Hungary, and that they share basic ideas about freedom and the market economy. The United States “supports the war,” the ultranationalist politician continued, stating that this difference of opinion is something that the Hungarian-American friendship “must put up with.”

After the US on Wednesday announced sanctions against three officials, including a Hungarian, of the Russian-controlled International Investment Bank (IIB), based in Budapest, the Magyar government announced its departure from the institution. In this regard, Orban affirmed today that Washington has not sanctioned Hungary, since the list published by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control contains dozens of names and among them only one Hungarian.

Bilateral relations between the two countries have worsened considerably after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as the Orban government distanced itself from its allies in the European Union (EU) and NATO in relation to sending military aid and sanctions. against Moscow.
