Eurovision 2024: Malmö, third city of Sweden, host of the contest

By winning Eurovision 2023, thanks to its singer Loreen, Sweden has won the right to organize the next edition. The occasion, in particular, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s victory. Eurovision 2024 will not be held in Stockholm, the capital, nor in Gothenburg, the country’s second largest city, but in Malmö, from May 7 to 11, 2024, the public television group SVT said on Friday July 7. In the past, Malmö has already hosted the competition twice.

“Malmö is a creative city with a rich cultural life that can create a music festival for all of Europe in a sustainable way, especially financially, since the arena […] and the logistics are already in place,” said said Hanna Stjärne, CEO of SVT, in a statement.

This is the seventh time that Sweden, a country where the competition is followed religiously, has hosted the competition, the year in which it will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its first success “Waterloo”, by the legendary group ABBA. The city has hosted him twice before, in 1992 and again in 2013.

“The EBU (European Broadcasting Union, which runs the competition) is delighted that Malmö has been chosen as the host city of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024,” said Martin Österdahl, executive supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest of the song.

The 2023 edition, organized because of the war by the United Kingdom instead of Ukraine victorious the previous year, was won by Sweden thanks to the singer Loreen, with her title “Tattoo”, an anthem pop on unconditional love.

The event, started in 1956, has grown in popularity over the years. The 67th edition of the contest was watched by 162 million viewers, the BBC announced in late May. In Sweden, 2.3 million people watched the final, for an audience share of 82.3%.
