Hesse: Left nominate Mehler-Würzbach as mayor candidate

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – The Left Party has nominated city councilor Daniela Mehler-Würzbach as mayor candidate for Frankfurt. The favorite of the district board received 86 percent of the votes at the general meeting on Saturday, as the party announced.

Mehler-Würzbach announced that he would support those who had no lobby in the city. She said: “My concern is to specifically underpin the social aspect with targeted emergency aid for energy costs, the strengthening of social housing and free local transport.”

The mayor election became necessary after the previous incumbent Peter Feldmann (SPD) was voted out. The vote in Hesse’s largest city will take place on Sunday, March 5, 2023. A possible run-off election would be three weeks later on March 26, 2023. Planning department head Mike Josef will stand for the SPD. Former mayor and treasurer Uwe Becker is to run for the CDU. The Greens also wanted to elect a candidate on Saturday.
