The National Maternal Perinatal Institute of Lima (INMP) has reported that its medical board decided to allow access to therapeutic abortion to the 11-year-old girl who was raped by her stepfather and who was denied this right in the first place, which generated the alert from United Nations agencies and various organizations.

“Mila”, a fictitious name to protect the identity of the minor under 11 years of age, came 17 weeks pregnant, as a result of a rape by her stepfather, and the medical board of the hospital that treated her, in the Amazonian department of Loreto, He denied her the abortion.

After the complaint by United Nations agencies and various organizations for this event, the minor was transferred to this specialized hospital in Lima, where she awaited the decision of the medical board. The case of “Mila” generated a reaction this week from United Nations organizations, Save the Children or CHS Alternativo, which urged the Peruvian State to guarantee the girl’s right to access therapeutic abortion.

Save the Children affirmed that the first medical board that attended her “made a decision contrary to the standards set by the Committee on the Rights of the Child.” The organization CHS Alternativo reported this Thursday that “Mila” is a girl who has not had the opportunity to attend school, she cannot read or write, and in addition to the trauma resulting from repeated abuse, she has grown up in a family in which her mother has also been a victim of violence.

In addition, the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations of Peru (MIMP) reported this Thursday that “Mila’s” stepfather is still free and requested his arrest. “The MIMP urges the Superior Court of Justice of (the Amazonian department of) Loreto to immediately order the preliminary arrest of Lucas Pezo Amaringo (41) accused of raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter.
