Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Fire most likely due to an unattended candle

Güstrow (dpa / mv) – In an apartment building in Güstrow, a fire probably broke out in an apartment due to an unattended candle. Since it was initially unclear whether there were still people in the affected apartment, the police violently opened the apartment door on Wednesday evening, as the Rostock police announced on Thursday night. During the extinguishing and rescue work, the entire house had to be evacuated.

While most residents were then able to return to their apartments, the affected apartment remained uninhabitable after the fire. The cause of the fire was “with a high degree of probability” determined to be an unattended candle, it said. The amount of damage caused was initially not known, said a spokeswoman for the Rostock police in the morning. It is now being investigated for negligent arson.
