Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: series of accidents with five injured: traffic jams around the island of Usedom

Anklam/Usedom (dpa/mv) – Several accidents with a total of five injuries led to long traffic jams in Western Pomerania on Whit Monday when returning from the island of Usedom. As a police spokesman said, two accidents happened on the federal highway 110 between Anklam and the city of Usedom and a collision in Zempin on the island of Usedom on the B111. The total damage was estimated at around 160,000 euros.

At Libnow (West Pomerania-Greifswald), a mobile home and an oncoming car that had gotten into the opposite lane collided around noon. The B110 – the only road that runs south from the island of Usedom to the mainland and is used by many Berliners and Brandenburgers – was blocked in both directions for several hours. The 85-year-old passenger in the camper was injured and taken to a clinic. Here the damage is estimated at 85,000 euros.

A driver wanted to turn around in a traffic jam. The 59-year-old turned in Murchin off the island and wanted to return to Anklam, but overlooked a car in oncoming traffic. This drove unbraked onto his car and pushed the vehicle against a third car. The 59-year-old was seriously injured, the driver of the second car was also injured in a clinic. Two cars had to be towed.

If you wanted to drive to Wolgast via the only northern access to the island of Usedom, you also had to stand in traffic for a long time. A car and a van collided in oncoming traffic on federal highway 111 near Zempin in the direction of Wolgast. The driver who had come into the oncoming lane and the passenger in the van were injured in hospitals. The 61-year-old driver was under the influence of alcohol, it said.
