North Rhine-Westphalia: boat accident on a school trip: young people in mortal danger

Bedburg (dpa / lnw) – A 16-year-old student is treated in intensive care after a boat accident during a school trip on the Erft in Bedburg in the Lower Rhine on Wednesday. Danger to life cannot be ruled out, the police said on Friday. After evaluating traces and witness statements, there is no evidence of third-party negligence. A 52-year-old teacher who tried to save the boy is also being treated in the hospital.

The 16-year-old is said to have drifted off, capsized and fallen into the water during a school trip when docking with his boat. At the scene of the accident there is a weir with treacherous currents. Firefighters had rescued and resuscitated the 16-year-old several dozen meters behind the weir from the Erft. The student, like everyone in the group, wore a life jacket during the boat tour, police said.
