North Rhine-Westphalia: Even in the second year of Corona, people bought more candles

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – Even in the second Corona year 2021, people in North Rhine-Westphalia bought significantly more candles. The production value, which is based on demand, rose by a good quarter to 50.5 million euros in 2021 compared to the previous year, the state statistical office IT.NRW announced on Tuesday. In 2020, statisticians had already recorded a significant increase since the beginning of the pandemic in spring. “It seems that people buy candles in times of need,” said a spokesman for the state office.

IT.NRW recorded by far the highest production value in the federal state for 20 years with around 88 million euros in 2009 – that was after the bankruptcy of the US bank Lehmann in autumn 2008 and the resulting global economic turbulence. The spokesman said that the energy crisis resulting from the war in Ukraine could possibly further increase sales figures.
