North Rhine-Westphalia: Fewer marriages in NRW in 2021 than in 2020

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) – Last year fewer marriages were concluded in North Rhine-Westphalia than in 2020. As the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday, a total of 76,771 couples said yes in 2021. That was 3.2 percent less than the year before (77,067 marriages). According to the information, 74,774 marriages between men and women and 1,997 marriages between same-sex partners (of which 1,113 female and 884 male couples) were concluded. In addition, 206 transformations of registered civil partnerships are included in the statistics.

The most popular months for marriage are always in summer: couples most frequently appeared in front of the registry office in August 2021 (9780), 9168 couples said yes in July, 9011 in September.

In mixed-sex first marriages, men (average age 33.7 years) were a good two years older than women (31.4). Male couples were 44.4 years old on average, female couples significantly younger with an average of 39.7 years. In four out of five marriages between men and women, it was the first marriage. Almost a fifth had previously been divorced or had their civil partnership dissolved at least once.
