Oscars 2017 political moments: Here’s what people said

After the recent presidential election and ensuing political controversy, it’s no surprise that this year’s Oscars got political at times. Here are four moments.

One joke that stood out was a nod to a recent ban of media outlets CNN, LA Times, New York Times and Politico at a White House press briefing.

“If you work for anything with the times in it, even the Medieval Times, we want nothing to do with it. Please leave the building,” Kimmel quipped.

Later in the show, actor Gael Garcia Bernal addressed the wall that President Donald Trump plans to build between the Mexican and U.S. borders.

And one political protest came in the form of an absence. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who directed the best foreign film winner “The Salesman,” spoke up by not showing up as a protest on Trump’s immigration order, which aimed to not allow individuals from seven countries, including Iran, from entering the United States.

“Moonlight” screenwriter Barry Jenkins addressed gender nonconforming boys and girls — a timely statement after Trump recently signed an order to rescind rules on bathrooms for transgender students.
