"Our song for Liverpool": who will win the German ESC preliminary round?

Nine applicants rush onto the stage to fly to the Eurovision Song Contest for Germany. Who has the best chance of winning the preliminary round? Online voting starts on February 24th, the decision will be made on March 3rd. All names, all songs at a glance.

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is by far the largest and widest-reaching pop music show spectacle in the world: at this year’s event on May 13 in Liverpool, candidates from 37 countries will be competing, including last year’s winner Ukraine with a new entry.

As a large public country, Germany automatically qualifies according to the ESC rules. Which contribution the Germans will send to the ESC final will only be decided in the pre-selection on March 3rd. Seven solo artists and two bands compete against each other in the German ESC preliminary round under the motto “Our song for Liverpool” to win the favor of the spectators.

In the race for the German ESC ticket are Frida Gold, Ikke Hipgold, Lord Of The Lost, René Miller, Anica Russo, Lonely Spring, Trong, Will Church and Patty Gurdy. The voting in the ESC preliminary round follows its own rules: Whoever can collect the most points can go to Liverpool. The vote is based on a multi-stage process: Half of the points are awarded by a jury during the show. The other half is made up of equal parts of the votes of ESC fans online and the votes of ESC viewers who dial in in the evening via telephone or SMS.

Fans can vote for their favorites online from Friday, February 24, at 6:00 a.m. sharp. Voting on the Internet is still possible on the day of the preliminary vote and ends shortly before the start of the show on March 3rd at 10 p.m.

“Anyone who takes part has one vote and can cast it accordingly for a candidate or band,” said the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The online votes flow into the selection decision with the votes from the viewer voting and the jury result.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will then be held on May 13 in Liverpool, England. Actually, the Ukrainian capital Kiev (Kyjiw) was planned as the next venue. After all, the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra clearly won the 2022 song contest in Turin last year with the title “Stefanie”. However, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the organizers had to find an alternative location. Great Britain stepped in as ESC host country for Ukraine attacked by Russia. Russia has been excluded from the ESC since Russian troops invaded.
