Saxony-Anhalt: AfD politician Siegmund criticizes "last generation"

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – AfD co-group leader Ulrich Siegmund has sharply criticized the actions of the protest group “Last Generation” and called for a different assessment. “We need a change in discourse on this topic,” he said on Monday in Magdeburg. The term “activists” is a trivialization. “We need different terms here: not activists, but extremists and criminals.” According to Siegmund, there is hardly any understanding among the population for the actions.

Activists from the “Last Generation” protest group recently paralyzed airport operations. In the past few weeks, they had also repeatedly blocked road traffic and stuck themselves to paintings in museums. Their goal is to draw public attention to the consequences of climate change and to call on politicians to take action. In a current debate, the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt wants to discuss the topic on Wednesday.
