Saxony-Anhalt: Dessau Kurt Weill Festival wants to be a podium for young artists

Dessau-Roßlau (dpa/sa) – Under the motto “In the sign of upheaval”, the next Kurt Weill Festival Dessau wants to draw an arc from the 1920s to the present. In its 31st edition, the festival will also be a platform for young artists, the organizers announced on Thursday when the program was presented. Around 50 events are planned from February 24 to March 12, 2023.

The program includes an evening “Revolverheld meets key lion”, in which Revolverheld lead singer Johannes Strate performs together with the pianist Sebastian Knauer, a concert by the pop duo Frida Gold with the Kaiser Quartet and a musical journey through time under the motto “Berlin, You cool pig” with The Capital Dance Orchestra.

The international culture festival is dedicated to the Dessau-born composer Kurt Weill (1900-1950). During his years in Germany he collaborated with Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) on works such as The Threepenny Opera and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Weill, son of a Jewish cantor, went into exile in 1933. He died in New York in 1950. He was a celebrated musical composer on Broadway.

After 1990, the festival was launched in Dessau, his hometown. “We are very happy that we were able to keep the admission prices for our audience stable,” emphasized festival director Gerhard Kampf. Advance sales for the 31st Kurt Weill Fest begin on October 17th. Venues are Dessau and the surrounding area, Halle, Bad Lauchstädt (Saalekreis) and Wittenberg.
