Saxony-Anhalt: Jerichower Elbdeich is renovated for 4.3 million euros

Jerichow (dpa/sa) – The Jerichow Elbdeich is to be renovated by the end of 2023. As the Ministry of the Environment announced on Monday at the groundbreaking ceremony, the dyke is to be strengthened over a length of around one kilometer on the right bank of the Elbe and increased by an average of 70 centimeters. The measures are intended to better protect Jerichow from flooding. A total of around 4.3 million euros are to be invested from state funds and the European Agricultural Fund.

The Jerichower Deich connects to the Fischbecker Deich in the northwest, the renovation of which was completed in 2018. After the floods of 2002 and 2013, Saxony-Anhalt invested heavily in flood protection. According to the Ministry of the Environment, more than 1000 individual measures have been implemented in the past 20 years.

In the course of the renovations, security measures will also be implemented on the wall of the Jerichow Monastery, which runs along the Jerichow Elbdeich. “Especially because of the monument protection, the preparation of the project was very challenging for everyone involved. Ultimately, the goal of completely securing the right Elbe dyke from the B 188n to Jerichow is achieved,” explained the director of the state office for flood protection, Burkhard Henning.
