Saxony-Anhalt: used car market in Saxony-Anhalt has collapsed significantly

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – A lack of young used cars has caused the market for this segment in Saxony-Anhalt to collapse significantly. With 11,118 transfers of ownership, there was no economic recovery in June 2022 either, the Saxony-Anhalt state association of the German motor vehicle trade announced on Monday in Magdeburg. That meant a drop of 27.6 percent, according to the association. In June 2021, 15,365 used vehicles were still sold.

In the interim balance for the year, losses of 15 percent were recorded for 68,026 transfers of ownership, according to state association president Thomas Peckruhn. The highest losses of minus 22.7 percent to 19,665 vehicles were reported for diesel cars (previous year: 25,436). In the first half of the year, petrol engines were down 14.3 percent to 43,923 (previous year: 51,260) sales. On the other hand, there were increases for electric vehicles with plus 135.5 percent to 624 (previous year: 265) and plug-in hybrids with plus 93 percent to 695 (previous year: 351).

Peckruhn explained that the demand was great, but the supply was too small. Since there are still very few registrations on the new car market, the lack of young used cars remains the dominant issue. This is fueled by the model policy of the manufacturers, who are thinning out their model range “in the small area”.
