With the entry into force of Royal Decree-Law 2/2023, of March 16, from October 1, part-time work is equated with full-time work for the purposes of calculating contribution periods to be entitled to a retirement pension and other contributory benefits.

From now on, each day worked, regardless of the type of shift or the number of hours, counts as a day of contributions for the purposes of calculating the contribution periods necessary for the recognition of the following benefits: retirement, permanent disability, death and survival, temporary disability, birth and care of minors.

This change affects the 2,972,276 Social Security affiliates with part-time contracts (data from September 2023), of which 67.53% are women.

This equalization does not modify the calculation of benefits, since the regulatory basis will remain the same depending on the contributions. In other words: the equalization only influences the time that must be worked to generate the right to benefits.

According to an article in the magazine of the Secretary of State for Social Security and Pensions, in the working life report “fewer days of contributions continue to appear because the contribution does not change and is based on the hours worked, that is, “This report reflects the actual day actually worked, since it may affect other circumstances. This equalization only affects the waiting period (minimum contribution period to access the benefit).”

Now, by accessing the Your Social Security portal, you can check the days contributed taking into account the equalization; You just have to select the “See your quotes” section. It should be remembered that to enter the portal it is necessary to identify yourself using the Cl@ve system, SMS (if the affiliate’s telephone number is registered); DNIe or digital certificate.

You can also access the work life report through other means. On the one hand, going to the Te Ayudamos service on the Social Security website and filling out a request to receive the report by mobile phone. Another alternative is to enter the Import@ss portal and request the documentation related to your work activity report in a document sent by letter to your home.

It must be taken into account that Social Security has already been applying the change in the calculation of benefits since 2019, when the Constitutional Court declared the unconstitutionality and nullity of the partiality coefficients, both for the calculation of the minimum required contribution periods and for the percentage applicable to the regulatory base for calculating the retirement pension.
