Soldier, 23, dies during training incident in California, U.S. Army says

The U.S. Army announced Saturday that a 23-year-old soldier was killed in a training incident at Fort Irwin’s National Training Center.

“Specialist Joseph Meitl Jr. was an important member of our Steel Dragon Team. “We are deeply saddened at the loss of an amazing Trooper and teammate,” Lt. Colonel Christopher Carpenter stated in the statement. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. We are thinking of them during this time of reflection and mourning.

Meitl received the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.
