Ignacio Magaña Sierra, who until last May was a socialist councilor in the Zaragoza City Council, was arrested this Saturday for the fourth time when he was involved in a multiple traffic accident under the influence of alcohol and possession of drugs.
On previous occasions, the former councilor and socialist leader was arrested after being reported for mistreatment of his partner. The PSOE expelled him, but he reinstated him when he was declared innocent.
Shortly after, he was involved in two traffic incidents, for which he was again suspended from militancy and in the last municipal elections he was removed from the lists.
This Saturday Magaña was arrested after being involved in a multiple accident with a hit-and-run in the La Paz neighborhood of the city of Zaragoza.
Apparently, according to Heraldo de Aragón and Periódico de Aragón published this Sunday, there were several vehicles involved and a pedestrian injured.
According to Hoy Aragón, Magaña could have driven under the influence of alcohol, without reaching a criminal charge. In addition, the Local Police officers, who are investigating the accident, would have found narcotic substances that the former mayor, apparently, was hiding in a sock.
In addition to being a councillor, Magaña was a deputy for the PSOE in the General Cortes for Zaragoza, secretary of Institutional Policy of the Provincial Executive Commission and general secretary of the Torrero Group of the city of Zaragoza.
Last April, the head of the Criminal Court number 1 of Zaragoza sentenced Magaña to pay a fine of 3,600 euros, for a crime against road safety, for driving without points on his license.
He had joined the socialist municipal group a few months ago after being acquitted of a case of gender violence against his wife, for which he was arrested on November 11, 2021 and later tried.
As a result of being caught on March 5 driving without points through the streets of Zaragoza, the PSOE decided to suspend Magaña from militancy again and open an information file against him.
In 2020, he was fined 1,900 euros and had four points removed from his license for driving without insurance and speeding. He was caught by radar when he was traveling at 68 kilometers per hour in an area limited to 30.
Ignacio Magaña, 45, had rejoined the municipal group of the PSOE last October after being acquitted of a case of gender violence.
During the trial, held behind closed doors, the mayor defended his innocence and assured that he had never mistreated his wife and explained that his complaint was solely due to a separation process.
However, the woman reiterated what she said before the National Police, which classified the case as a high risk level in the Viogen system.
She confessed that the most serious event and the one in which she felt “the most afraid” would have occurred the previous winter when she wanted to leave the family home.
“Ignacio reacted aggressively by pushing me against the bed, preventing me from moving by grabbing my neck. He went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, put it on my chest and told me that he was going to get out of there over his body,” reported in the complaint.
The councilor was discharged as a member of the PSOE, but did not renounce his membership in the city council and continued his work in plenary sessions and commissions as a non-affiliated member.
Once the court ruling was known, he requested his reincorporation into the socialist ranks, following the guidelines of the party’s ethical code.
After being accepted by the national leadership, the municipal group formally requested its return before the General Secretariat of the plenary session of the Zaragoza City Council.
