Spain Omella apologizes to the victims of abuse but affirms that "the figures extrapolated by some media are lies"

The president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) and Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona, ??Juan José Omella, has reiterated that he regrets sexual abuse in the Church and its consequences: “We will not tire of asking for forgiveness from the victims and working for their healing.” , but he has also said that some media outlets manipulate the data. “The figures extrapolated by some media outlets are lies and are intended to deceive,” he stated in a message on the social network X collected by Europa Press this Saturday.

He says this the day after the Ombudsman presented in Congress the ‘Report on sexual abuse in the scope of the Catholic Church and the role of public powers’.

Omella recalled a fragment of the ‘Catechism of the Catholic Church’, according to which ‘the Church is both holy and always in need of purification… All members of the Church, including its ministers, must recognize themselves as sinners.’

And he has transcribed another fragment: ‘In everyone, the weeds of sin are still mixed with the good seed of the Gospel until the end of time. The Church brings together sinners already reached by the salvation of Christ, but still in the process of sanctification.’
