A man has died and two others have survived, all of them of Russian origin, when the Mai Tai sailboat in which they were traveling sank early this Wednesday after hitting some rocks north of Lanzarote, Maritime Rescue sources have informed Efe. and the island’s Emergency Consortium.
The body of the deceased crew member was rescued this morning at sea, off the coast of Tinajo, where the sailboat capsized last night, while the two survivors, two men aged 52 and 40, were located at dawn, one in the water by a Maritime Rescue helicopter and another on the ground by firefighters from the Consortium.
The two men had hypothermia and the youngest had also suffered multiple contusions, and both remain admitted to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Lazarote, the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center of the Canary Islands Government detailed in a statement.
The Mai Tai sailboat issued an alert this morning at 1:20 a.m. giving its position north of Lanzarote, so the Las Palmas Rescue Center mobilized the Helimer 204 helicopter, the Concepción Arenal sea guard and the Consortium’s firefighters, according to what they indicated. Maritime Rescue sources.
After the helicopter sighted the wreckage – at around 2:40 a.m. – it proceeded to rescue the first survivor in the water, which confirmed that three people were traveling on the sailboat and that it had been shipwrecked when it hit the rocks.
The three people left the ship without a life jacket, according to what this crew member told his rescuers, who was evacuated by helicopter to the Lanzarote airport, where an ambulance was waiting for him and took him to the hospital.
According to Maritime Rescue sources, the other crew member rescued by firefighters was located on land around 4:00 a.m. and was also evacuated by the Helimer 204 for transfer to the hospital.
The body of the deceased crew member was located around 10:10 a.m. by a helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group of the Government of the Canary Islands, which took it to the Lanzarote airport for identification.
