The United States Coast Guard announced on Sunday that it had opened an investigation to determine the causes of the implosion of the Titan submersible, the five passengers of which died during a dive towards the wreck of the Titanic.
“My primary objective is to prevent a similar occurrence by making the necessary recommendations to improve the safety of the maritime industry worldwide,” said Jason Neubauer, chief investigator of the Coast Guard and head of the investigation, during the meeting. a press conference in Boston (northeast).
An initial collection of evidence is underway, including “debris at the site of the incident”, he added.
The American investigation will also be able to issue “if necessary” an opinion about possible legal proceedings.
The Titan, about 6.5 meters long, had dived on June 18 and was expected to resurface seven hours later but contact was lost less than two hours after its departure.
Its five passengers died in the “catastrophic implosion” of the craft, the coastguard announced on Thursday.
Several pieces of debris were found on the seabed some 500 meters from the Titanic and at a depth of nearly 4,000 meters in the Atlantic Ocean.
Another investigation has been opened by Canada, which participated in the search for the submersible, Canadian authorities said on Saturday.
