The deaths by suicide have increased by 3.1% in a year to 3.679 and are placed far above those who lost their lives in traffic accidents, which amounted to 1.943 deaths in 2017, with an increase of 2.8%.

Are some of the data corresponding to 2017 that are extracted from the statistics Deaths according to cause of Death released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In 2017, died in Spain 424.523 people, 13.912 more than the previous year (3.4%) and of them 214.236 were men (2,5% more) and 210.287 women (4,3% more).

These figures put the gross mortality rate in 912,3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, 3.2% higher than the previous year, with quite a lot of difference between men and women because the first was 938,4 deaths per 100,000 men (2.4%) and the female in 887,2 (4% more).

Highlights the INE that in 2017 96.3% of the deaths (408.686 people, 3.5% more than a year before) was due to natural causes.

The main causes of death among people 15 to 39 years were the external causes -among which is the suicide- (41.1% of total) and tumors (or 23.8%).

In those older than 79 years diseases of the circulatory system (33,1% of the total) and tumors (17%) were the main reasons.

By sex, ischaemic heart diseases were the first cause of death in men while among them were the strokes.

More women killed by lung cancer
