Teachers reported that conflicts in the classroom with Elementary school children now exceed those of High school

Teachers complain about the lack of an effective strategic plan at the national level, and tools to combat this problem

The State Observatory for School Coexistence has spent seven years without meeting, and in the new education act of the Government does not address this problem

The annual report, which have been presented this Tuesday, points out that 44% of the registered cases corresponds to complaints of teachers serving children between six and 12 years, while 39% of teachers of students between 13 and 18 years.

Nicolás Fernández Guisado, president of Anpe, has explained that during the recent years cases have been increasing in Primary education in a sustained manner. In Anpe do not know very well what could lie behind this trend. The neuropsychologist Álvaro Bilbao says that “bullying is much more prevalent in Primary than in Secondary school”. “Before you started at 10 or 11 and ended at 14. “The age of these conflicts is going down more and more,” adds the psychologist María Jesús Álava. “These guys every time they have more access to new technologies and repeating patterns that they are seeing constantly. At the level of teachers, are in a situation that is starting to overflow, and in that period of pre-adolescence is very common to give this type of cases.”

The broadcaster Catherine L’ Ecuyer, author of Educating in amazement, believes that behind this advancement could be the influence of video games with violent content that have been made fashionable amongst the young, despite the fact that they are designed for teenagers, and that the children are delivered during hours.

“The contents are becoming more aggressive and fast. The child becomes hyperactive, nervous, is not happy with himself and wants to draw the attention of the adults in violation of the rules. You need to find entertainment or new sensations each time more intense, to alleviate their addiction to overstimulation. When she finds it, she calms down, as a smoker eager to be reunited with his cigarette,” he says.

The teachers of Anpe also recognize their impotence to deal with certain situations which, by their novelty, do not know very well how to manage. “These conflicts are more difficult to troubleshoot when we don’t have enough training in technology,” he warned Chrysalis Rodriguez, coordinator of the Defender of the Professor, who warns of the reduction of co-ordinators ICT. “We are seeing teachers who, nearing retirement age, are suddenly confronted with stage fright, with anxiety, with sleep problems… We are teachers of the TWENTIETH century that we find students of the TWENTY-first century and we need to help us reconvertirnos”.

Nicolás Fernández Guisado has called for more training for teachers and, above all, a coordinated action on the part of the Government. Has reported that the Strategic Plan of School Coexistence, to prevent and control violent incidents or harassment in schools, “has resulted only in a celebration of a congress, and the enabling of a telephone at the disposal of the victims that we don’t even know what effects it has had.”

“Miss more coordination between the different autonomous communities, some of which have good protocols but there must be a plan for the prevention and detection effective. This problem casts its collateral damage to the whole center,” he added.
