‘The owners of the hunt’, from the world, API Award for the best news journalistic research of the year

The monograph of the owners of the hunting, published in November 2020 by this newspaper, has been recognized by the Association of Research Journalists of Spain (API) with the first prize for the best journalistic research of the last year in the data category.

Elaborated by the editors Jose F. Leal, Hugo Garrido and Virginia Hernández, research processes unpublished public data obtained exclusively to perform for the first time a mapping of land ownership in Spain, and concludes that 500 families control the 4.1

The owners of the hunting uses current public data obtained using the springs of the 2013 Transparency Law, which forces institutions to facilitate citizens with information that it considers relevant.
Among its contents include a list with profiles of the 100 largest owners of cinegetic land from Spain, among which are tens of the biggest fortunes in the country, but also the main representatives of the old aristocracy and the elite arising during the Franco regime,
The Church, multinationals, ibex companies, great ranchers, the meat industry, senior executives of yesterday and today, politicians and rich foreign, such as the Duke of Westminster or the kings of the Arab Emirates.

The list of large owners is headed by Juan Abellóy, his family (41,276 hectares), the Samuel Flores Cattle (34,099 ha), the landlords Mora Figueroa Domecq (28,242 ha), the March family (30,285 ha).
Of the 100 largest preowners, 68 reside in Madrid

The depth of the data analyzed in the monograph also allows public another listing with the property of the 2,100 largest preserves in Spain, its extension and its location.
