Thuringia: Hardly any investigations into "Z" symbols in Thuringia

Anyone who supports the Russian war of aggression by using the “Z” symbol must expect consequences in Thuringia. So far, however, there have only been a few such cases.

Erfurt (dpa/th) – In Thuringia, there have so far been hardly any investigations in connection with the “Z” symbol used by supporters of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The State Criminal Police Office recently recorded twelve cases, a spokeswoman said. Investigated because of the approval of criminal offenses. Several dozen such cases had recently become known in Saxony or Saxony-Anhalt.

The letter “Z” is used by supporters of the Russian war in Ukraine. It stands for “Za Pobedu” – “For Victory”. It will also be shown outside of the war zone on buildings, cars and clothing, as well as on social media.

Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) made it clear in March that he considers the use of the symbol in demonstrations to be a criminal offence. The Thuringian police will document such cases and pass them on to the public prosecutor’s office in a timely manner, he said at the time.

According to the LKA, no crimes in connection with the symbol have been registered at demonstrations so far. Instead, the “Z” was smeared with paint on public roads, paths or squares, among other things. Some traffic signs, cars or bus stops were also affected. In one case, the letter was stuck on a car as a sticker.
