Anna Maxwell Martin, known for her roles in Line of Duty and Ludwig, recently shared the heartbreaking details surrounding the sudden death of her ex-husband, Roger Michell, who passed away four years ago. Michell, a double BAFTA-winner and director of Notting Hill, died of a heart attack on the same day he completed the final sound mix of his last film, Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts. The cause of death was revealed to be an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and left coronary atheroma (fatty deposit build-up on the coronary artery), according to his death certificate.

Despite their separation, Maxwell Martin expressed the financial challenges she faced following Michell’s death, emphasizing her priority to protect their daughters, Maggie and Nancy. The couple first met when Michell directed Martin in the 2004 adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel Enduring Love when she was 26 and he was 48.

In an interview, Maxwell Martin shared how she struggled to come to terms with Michell’s death, drawing parallels to her father’s passing when she was only 24. She highlighted the importance of having a strong support network during times of loss, reflecting on her gratitude for the friends who stood by her.

Michell, best known for directing Notting Hill and working on films such as Changing Lanes and Venus, had an impressive career in the film industry. Maxwell Martin’s candid reflections on grief, loss, and resilience serve as a poignant reminder of the complexities of dealing with the death of a loved one. Her story sheds light on the financial implications and emotional toll that can accompany such a loss, emphasizing the importance of support and strength during difficult times.
