War in Ukraine Zelensky makes a surprise visit to a US base in Germany

The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, confirmed this Thursday his surprise visit to a US base in Wiesbaden (southern Germany) from which military aid for Ukraine is coordinated.

“Once again I was convinced of the excellent quality of American military aid to Ukraine. We need it critically for victory!” he stated through his social networks, in which he published photos and a video of the visit.

“We hope that the US Congress will soon make the crucial decision to maintain this vital support for Ukraine,” he concluded.

On his Telegram channel, Zelensky explained that he had discussed during the visit the work of the Ukrainian Security Promotion Group, which ensures the logistics of the supply of ammunition and military equipment, their repair and maintenance.

“It is an honor for me to speak today with Ukrainian soldiers working in Wiesbaden,” he said, referring to his meeting with members of said group.

The Frankfurt Police had advanced the news of Zelensky’s landing in Frankfurt (west) on the social network

According to this body of the German forces and security, the head of state of Ukraine made a “stop” at the US Clay base in Wiesbaden, headquarters of the US Army for Europe and Africa.

“The Ukrainian president’s stop at Clay Barracks in Wiesbaden will soon end. There will again be short-term closures for departures from Germany” from the airport, he noted.

In November 2022, the US Department of Defense announced that it was establishing the Ukrainian Security Assistance Group (SAFG-U) in Wiesbaden to coordinate military aid to kyiv.

A spokesperson for Zelensky confirmed to the German magazine Der Spiegel that the president visited the US base, where he met with base command generals Christopher Cavoli and Darryl Williams, as well as Lieutenant General Antonio Aguto, commander of the SAFG. U, in order to “get to know them.”

About 300 soldiers work in Wiesbaden for the Ukrainian Security Assistance Group.

In total, Zelensky was in the barracks for just two hours, and he was already returning to kyiv when the European Council decided to approve the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Zelensky described the decision as a “victory for Ukraine” and “for all of Europe.” “A victory that motivates, inspires and strengthens,” he wrote on his social networks.
