news-21112024-081239

Avantium N.V., a company specializing in renewable and circular polymer materials, has announced a new partnership with SCG Chemicals Public Company Limited (SCGC). This collaboration aims to pilot the production of PLGA (polylactic-co-glycolic acid), a biodegradable and recyclable polyester with excellent barrier and mechanical properties. The goal is to create a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil-based polyesters.

Over the past year, Avantium and SCGC have been working together to study the properties of PLGA and optimize its formulation for large-scale polymer applications. The focus has been on enhancing barrier properties, recyclability, and environmental impact. Now, the two companies have committed to a multi-year collaboration to pilot the production of PLGA using CO2 feedstock.

SCGC will provide support for all stages of technology development, and both companies will collaborate on developing various PLGA applications for the market. Avantium has also granted SCGC the option to negotiate a license deal to utilize its Volta Technology, which includes PLGA production, in Southeast Asia. This strategic partnership is expected to accelerate the adoption of Avantium’s innovative technologies in the region and promote the growth of sustainable materials for a circular economy.

Dr. Suracha Udomsak, Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer of SCGC, expressed the company’s commitment to advancing Green Innovation to address low carbon challenges. SCGC aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 and sees great potential in the sustainability and performance characteristics of PLGA. The collaboration with Avantium is seen as a step towards further advancing PLGA production in the coming years.

Gert-Jan Gruter, Chief Technology Officer at Avantium, is excited about the partnership with SCGC and the opportunity to showcase the potential of their Volta Technology. This collaboration underscores both companies’ dedication to sustainability and innovation. By strengthening their ties with SCGC, a key investor in Avantium and a partner in their FDCA and PEF technology, Avantium aims to make a significant impact on the global materials market.

Overall, the partnership between Avantium and SCGC signifies a significant step forward in the development and commercialization of sustainable materials. This collaboration not only highlights the potential of PLGA as a green alternative but also demonstrates a shared commitment to driving positive change in the materials industry. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, Avantium and SCGC are paving the way for a more environmentally friendly future.
