Ford Unveils F-150 Lightning-Based Supertruck for Pikes Peak Challenge

Automaker Ford Motor Co teased a new supertruck based on its popular F-150 Lightning pickup, set to participate in the upcoming Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in June. The test supertruck will run a 12.5-mile uphill course to push the boundaries of Ford’s EV powertrains, with insights to be applied to future production vehicles.

The qualifying run for the supertruck is scheduled for June 18-20 in Colorado Springs, followed by the hill climb on June 23. This marks the second year in a row that Ford is showcasing an electric test vehicle at Pikes Peak, known as The Race to the Clouds. Last year, the automaker brought a super van based on its E-Transit Custom van to the competition.

The F-150 Lightning has emerged as Ford’s second best-selling EV in 2024, with 9,833 units sold in the first four months of the year, reflecting a 74.8% increase from the same period in the previous year. Despite the success of the Lightning, Ford’s top-selling EV remains the Mustang Mach-E SUV, with 14,482 units sold.

The unveiling of the F-150 Lightning-based supertruck for the Pikes Peak challenge underscores Ford’s commitment to advancing electric mobility and testing innovative technology in extreme conditions.
