Hygenco and Topsoe Partner for Green Ammonia Project in Chemical Industry

news-26112024-195047

Topsoe, a company known for its expertise in reducing carbon emissions, has recently announced a partnership with Hygenco, a developer in the chemical industry. This collaboration is focused on implementing Topsoe’s advanced dynamic ammonia technology in Hygenco’s new green ammonia plant in Gopalpur, Odisha, India.

The use of Topsoe’s cutting-edge technology will provide Hygenco with the flexibility and efficiency needed in ammonia production. This technology allows the plant to adjust its operations according to the fluctuating supply of renewable electricity, aligning with Hygenco’s goal of exporting green ammonia to European markets and complying with the European Union’s regulations on Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin.

Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, emphasized the importance of green ammonia in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in energy-intensive industries and long-distance transportation. She believes that Hygenco’s project will make a significant contribution to global decarbonization efforts.

Amit Bansal, Co-Founder and CEO of Hygenco, expressed the company’s dedication to advancing the energy transition. By leveraging Topsoe’s innovative technology, Hygenco aims to scale up green ammonia production effectively and address environmental challenges.

Green ammonia is becoming increasingly crucial in the journey towards achieving net-zero emissions. It can be utilized as a fuel, hydrogen carrier, and input for decarbonizing industries like steel and cement production. The green ammonia plant in Gopalpur, Odisha, India, is the first phase of a larger project and is expected to produce 750 tons of green ammonia per day by 2027.

Topsoe’s DynAMMO™ technology, which allows for dynamic adjustment of ammonia production based on renewable electricity availability, offers several benefits. These include bidirectional production adjustment, cost efficiency by reducing the need for hydrogen storage systems, and zero-carbon chemical storage to ensure efficient energy use.

In conclusion, green ammonia is poised to play a significant role in achieving net-zero emissions. Its versatility as a fuel, energy carrier, and fertilizer makes it an ideal solution for decarbonization efforts. The collaboration between Topsoe and Hygenco is a step towards transforming the energy landscape and advancing global decarbonization goals.
