Internet outage hits websites hosted by Amazon Web Services

A massive outage has hit services using Amazon’s cloud, affecting a variety of websites, including NJ.com.

The cause of the outage, which started just before 1 p.m. is not known, The Register reported.

Amazon Web Services hosts the cloud services for Amazon, according to bgr.com. The company’s Amazon Simple Storage System (S3) is used by a number of different companies.

Sites including Business Insider, Expedia, Medium and News Corp. were affected, according to venturebeat.com.

The report also said sites like Airbnb, Pinterest, and the Snapchat Bitmoji site were slow. Parts of the Amazon shopping site were also hit.

“We are actively working on remediating the issue,” Amazon Web Services said.
