Optimizing 5G Base Station Performance with AI: SK Telecom and Samsung Collaboration

news-31102024-052751

SK Telecom and Samsung have collaborated to optimize 5G base station performance using artificial intelligence. Engineers from both companies worked together for almost a year to develop a deep learning-based system called AI-RAN Parameter Recommender. This system can automatically recommend the best parameters for base station environments, maximizing their potential performance.

Ryu Tak-ki, the head of the infrastructure technology division at SK Telecom, stated that this achievement confirms that individual base stations’ performance can be enhanced by incorporating AI technology. The AI-RAN Parameter Recommender has been tested on SK Telecom’s own infrastructure and can now be applied to commercial networks.

Mobile base stations face varying wireless conditions depending on their location and nearby facilities. This variability can lead to differences in 5G service quality across different areas, even when using the same standard equipment. To address this issue, SK Telecom utilized AI to improve its 5G network operations. By applying a deep learning model to analyze the relationship between wireless network data and AI parameters, the company can predict wireless environments and service characteristics. This allows for the automatic derivation of optimal settings to enhance perceived quality.

Samsung contributed its Network Parameter Optimization AI Model to further enhance wireless network environments and performance. By combining this model with SK Telecom’s AI solution, the jointly developed system can now predict wireless environments and automatically set optimal parameters for each base station. This results in improved 5G service quality and adaptability across various locations.

Choi Sung-hyun, head of the advanced development team in Samsung Electronics’ network business division, emphasized the importance of AI in driving innovation in various industries and its role in the evolution of next-generation networks. Samsung Electronics aims to lead the development of intelligent and automated technologies for AI-based next-generation networks.

In addition to collaborating with Samsung, SK Telecom is also working on advancing AI to transform its network. This includes developing technologies that automatically adjust base station output and implement future beamforming, a technique that directs antenna signals towards specific devices for stronger transmission and reception. SK Telecom’s goal is to evolve into an AI-Native Network that offers customers differentiated experiences through the convergence of telecommunications and AI technologies.

This collaboration between SK Telecom and Samsung highlights the significant role that AI can play in optimizing 5G network performance and enhancing user experiences. As the two companies continue to innovate and develop intelligent technologies, the future of next-generation networks looks promising.
