Ponant, the French expedition line, has unveiled a comprehensive sustainability strategy called ‘Blue Horizon’ in its latest sustainability report. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and has already seen an 11% reduction in CO2 emissions per cruise day last year compared to 2018.

In addition to efforts to protect nature and improve workplace wellbeing, Ponant is focused on raising awareness and reducing its ecological footprint. The company is leveraging the best available technologies to reduce its environmental impact and enhance its positive contribution.

One of the key initiatives undertaken by Ponant is the trial of biofuel, which emits 90% fewer CO2 emissions than fossil fuels. With 12 vessels already certified for biofuel use, Ponant is well on its way to reaching its 2050 goal of net-zero emissions.

Furthermore, Ponant has implemented measures to reduce single-use plastics, increase the generation of drinking water from seawater, and separate and sort all onboard waste. These efforts have resulted in the avoidance of more than 20 tons of single-use plastics fleet-wide.

Moreover, Ponant has increased its budget for supporting research into marine ecosystems and environmental changes to €2.2 million last year. The company plans to expand its science programme in 2025 to include additional vessels, further enhancing its support for scientific research in remote areas across the globe.

Wassim Daoud, the Head of CSR and sustainability at Ponant, emphasized that while the company is proud of its accomplishments, the journey towards sustainable tourism is ongoing. Through a combination of innovation and collaboration, Ponant is committed to setting the highest industry standard for accountable and transparent sustainability practices.

As Ponant continues to make strides towards its sustainability goals, the company serves as a shining example for the travel industry. By prioritizing environmental conservation, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting scientific research, Ponant is paving the way for a more sustainable future in the travel sector.
