Populus by Studio Gang: First Carbon Positive Hotel in US Opens in Denver

news-17102024-043655

Located in downtown Denver, the Populus hotel by Studio Gang has recently opened its doors as the first carbon positive hotel in the US. Designed by renowned architect Jeanne Gang, the hotel stands as a testament to sustainable and innovative architecture.

The inspiration behind Populus came from a hike in the Colorado aspen forests, where Gang and Grant McCargo, from Urban Villages, found a shared love for nature and a concern for the environment. This led to the development of a unique concept that blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

The 13-storey structure of Populus resembles a cluster of trees with ‘eyes’, inspired by the white-barked aspen trees found during the hike. The façade of the building is made from curved panels of glass fibre-reinforced concrete, a material with lower embodied carbon developed in collaboration with Holcim. These panels mimic the shape of the trees’ eye-shaped marks, creating a visually striking pattern.

In addition to its eco-friendly design, Populus also focuses on using local materials and makers for its interiors. The warm and neutral palette of soft greens and browns creates a cohesive and inviting atmosphere throughout the hotel’s guestrooms, public spaces, and restaurants. From reclaimed snow fences to terracotta tiles made from mud from the Platte River, every detail reflects a commitment to sustainability and local craftsmanship.

One of the notable features of Populus is its lack of street-level parking, a deliberate choice by Studio Gang to encourage walkability and community engagement. By activating all three sides of the building, the hotel becomes a focal point in downtown Denver, connecting various cultural and artistic landmarks in the city.

Moreover, Populus is aiming for the prestigious LEED Gold Certification, further solidifying its commitment to environmental stewardship. The hotel has also planted over 70,000 Engelmann Spruce trees in Gunnison County, Colorado, contributing to its carbon positive status.

Overall, Populus by Studio Gang represents a new standard in sustainable hospitality design, showcasing how architecture can both blend with and enhance the natural environment. With its focus on local materials, innovative construction techniques, and community engagement, the hotel sets a precedent for future eco-conscious developments in urban areas.
