An incredible collection of vintage sports cars, including Porsches, Lamborghinis, and a Mercedes Gullwing, recently went up for auction after sitting in a junkyard for decades. The auction, known as The Junkyard, was conducted by RM Sotheby’s and generated a staggering $29.6 million in sales.

The man behind this impressive collection was Rudi Klein, a German immigrant who founded Porsche Foreign Auto, a scrapyard business in Los Angeles, in 1967. Over the years, Klein acquired a wide range of classic cars from Europe, such as Ferraris, Porsches, Maseratis, and Lamborghinis, all of which were kept hidden from the public eye.

One of the most sought-after cars in the collection was the last-of-its-kind Mercedes Gullwing, which fetched a whopping $9.3 million at the auction. This rare ‘Alloy’ Gullwing was a unique piece that left the Mercedes-Benz factory, adding to its desirability among collectors.

Other notable sales from the auction included a 1935 Mercedes 500 K, built for racing driver Rudolf Caracciola, which sold for $4.1 million, a 1939 Horch 855 Special Roadster that fetched $3.3 million, and an Iso Grifo Spider prototype that went for $1.8 million. Even a worn-out Lamborghini Miura managed to sell for $1.3 million, showcasing the enduring appeal of these iconic vehicles.

For car enthusiasts, Klein’s collection has always been shrouded in mystery, with very few people having access to it over the years. The auction of these rare and unique cars garnered significant attention globally, highlighting the enduring fascination with vintage sports cars.

Following the successful auction, RM Sotheby’s specialist Cary Ahl expressed the significance of the Rudi Klein collection, noting the immediate and overwhelming response from the global community. The sale of these vintage sports cars not only marked the dispersal of a hidden gem but also showcased the enduring appeal and value of classic automobiles.

In a world where automotive innovation continues to push boundaries, the auction of these vintage sports cars serves as a reminder of the timeless allure of classic vehicles. As collectors and enthusiasts seek out rare and unique pieces to add to their collections, the legacy of Rudi Klein and his remarkable car collection lives on, inspiring awe and admiration among those passionate about automotive history.
