Today, Wednesday March 1, the Catholic Church honors San Rosendo.

Rosendo belonged to a noble Galician family that was related to the Royal House.

He was the second son of Count Gutiérrez Menéndez and Ilduara Eriz. Assigned to the Church, he professed as a monk and became abbot of the Monastery of San Salvador de Portomarín (Lugo).

Subsequently, he succeeded his uncle Sabarico (with whom he had been educated) at the head of the diocese of Mondoñedo with the title of Bishop of Dumio.

Rosendo renounced the direct government of the diocese to retire as a simple monk to Celanova in the year 948. However, he had to leave the monastery by order of Ramiro III to exercise the position of governor of Galicia.

According to the Royal Academy of History, in this position he had to face the invasions of the Normans and even led a campaign against the Moors in Portugal.

Returning to the monastery, he was elected Superior on the death of Franquila in the year 959.

Cardinal Jacinto Bobo, apostolic legate in Spain and future Pope Celestine III, exhumed the remains of Saint Rosendo in 1172. He transferred them to the church of Santa María allowing their public worship. An action that then amounted to a formal canonization. Already being Pope, in the year 1194, he solemnly ratified this cult.

The Catholic saints are the group of people recognized by the Church as saints or blessed on a specific date. The Roman Martyrology is the document that names and distributes in the calendar the almost 7,000 saints and blessed recognized by the Church.

The saints and saints are prominent men and women in the various religious traditions for their special relationships with the divinities or for a particular ethical elevation. While the consideration of blessed constitutes the third step on the path to canonization.
