9-Year-Old Singaporean Wins Top Prize at International Violin Competition

Travis Wong, a talented young violinist from Singapore, recently made headlines by winning the prestigious 31st Andrea Postacchini International Violin Competition in Fermo, Italy. At just nine years old, Travis emerged as the overall winner of the competition, surpassing participants much older than him. His exceptional performance earned him a specially crafted Stradivari model violin and a bow as prizes.

Travis, a student at Fairfield Methodist School, had the opportunity to showcase his musical talent in front of a large audience at the Teatro dell’Aquila opera house. Despite feeling nervous initially, Travis delivered a flawless performance that captivated the crowd. His win in Category A of the competition also came with a cash prize of €1,400.

Having started playing the violin at the age of three, Travis has demonstrated remarkable progress over the years. His commitment to daily practice, which sometimes extends to four hours when preparing for competitions, has paid off in numerous accolades and achievements. Travis’s mother, Ms. Joleen Toh, continues to support his passion for music and hopes that he will always find joy in pursuing his dreams.

Travis’s journey to success began in 2021 when he achieved a distinction in the Grade 8 violin performance examination by ABRSM. Since then, he has participated in various competitions and attended master classes to further hone his skills. Travis draws inspiration from his idol, Chloe Chua, a fellow Singaporean violinist who has made a name for herself on the international stage.
