All hospitals prohibit that humans and pigs share the same machine

Faith knew that animals and people could not share the same resonance

Hospitals where research is conducted with application of technology of image diagnosis have prohibited the use of the same Mri or cat scan (computerized axial tomography) of a shared basis for human and animals. The only exception is made in the Research Institute IIS Faith by the Area director of Diagnostic and Image of the Hospital La Fe, Luis Martí-Bonmatí, without appropriate authorization, and, therefore, without applying the protocols of disinfection and hygiene set by the health authorities.

In all centres consulted by THE WORLD it has been confirmed that they have received proposals from investigators to conduct clinical trials with animals in the various departments of radiology but the response of its leaders has always been that the national legislation prohibits toggle to people and animals on the same technology.

From the Clinical Hospital it was explained that the Incliva (research center attached to the hospital) submitted a project to make resonances to animals, but warned him that it was impossible because it was vetoed by the national regulations. A similar situation occurred at the General Hospital, where years ago already that denied the possibility of exploring shared to people and beasts. An end that is also prevented in the Hospital Doctor Peset and the Foundation for the Promotion of Health Research and Biomedicine of the Comunitat Valenciana (Fisabio) when requested by researchers.

The same refusal to perform these practices is showed from the marie therese (one of the firms that participate in the UTE Erescanner Health, which is the concessionaire of the technology of diagnostic imaging in the public hospitals).

After making the question of whether he had used on occasion a same machine for testing in humans and animals alike, the company that has its headquarters in Campanar, was very emphatic: “with Regard to the question of whether marie therese tests to animals, marie therese (Group ASCIRES) has always respected the criteria of the national institutions in this regard and, in consequence, has never been tested on animals outside of technology devoted exclusively to it”.

To perform the explorations to animals will contract with veterinary clinics or universities, which are only intended technology for this use.

From the group ASCIRES it was confirmed that to meet the needs of researchers in the animal facilities the company has available a “micro-PET technology (diagnostic molecular imaging) in Barcelona, for the exclusive use of small animals”.

The prohibition of the use of machines to humans and to pigs, rats, turtles or dolphins -despite the fact that is obvious in the Hospital of Faith and testing is done on alternate days – is applied with great rigour in the rest of hospitals in Spain where research is conducted.

This journal was put yesterday in contact with the University Hospital Jiménez Díaz Foundation of Madrid to know the protocol when in need of scans of animals. The response of the center was that “there should be shared use.” To monitor mice in no case use is made of the PET-CT scan of the foundation. The researchers come to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital where there is a microPET-CT, Positron emission tomography, computerized-machine like the people, but in the smaller animals.

In the National Cardiovascular Research Centre (CNIC) has been proposed on several occasions to use techniques that have used instrumental for humans to apply it to pigs, but has always been denied by not be picked up in the national regulations of research.
