Cause still unclear: men die in a plane crash in Bavaria

A 69-year-old wants to fly from Saxony to Austria with an 80-year-old. When contact with the men suddenly breaks off, relatives call the police. After a large-scale search operation, emergency services discover the machine in a forest area.

Two men from Saxony died in a plane crash in Lower Bavaria. The crashed ultralight aircraft was found early Wednesday morning in a forest area near Neureichenau (Freyung-Grafenau district), said a police spokesman. Any help came too late for the 69-year-old pilot and his 80-year-old companion.

The men had already started in Dresden on Tuesday morning. They wanted to fly to Wels in Austria. In the evening, the relatives informed the Dresden police because they had lost contact with the occupants of the plane. The police in Saxony then arranged for cell phone tracking to find the men. This pointed to the district of Altreichenau in the Bavarian Forest. So the local police launched a major search.

With the forces of the mountain rescue service, the fire brigade and a rescue dog squadron, a search was carried out at night, and a police helicopter was also involved. The machine was discovered after midnight in a densely wooded area.

The exact time of the crash is still unclear. A police spokesman explained that it also had to be determined whether the men made a stopover on their way from Saxony to Austria. The cause of the crash has yet to be determined. The police and the public prosecutor’s office from Passau are now investigating the crash.
