La Plaza, Jordi González’s show, with which RTVE has tried to compete with Sonsoles Ónega and Ana Rosa Quintana, has lasted for just over a week, without success. The poor audience data, more than one point below its predecessor, El Comodín, has been the reason that led the Public Corporation to announce the end of the program this Friday.
As reported by El Televiseroy and confirmed by this newspaper, starting this afternoon’s program it will be the last one on La Plaza, although, as RTVE sources have explained to EL MUNDO, Jordi González will continue to be linked to the public channel, as he will continue to lead of Blood Ties.
Starting Monday, La 1 will once again broadcast El Comodín, presented by Aitor Albizua, who two weeks ago said goodbye on his social networks. According to RTVE sources, unpublished contest programs will begin to be broadcast until a new replacement is found for La Plaza, which in principle will also be a contest, thus abandoning the commitment to magazines.
The contest was canceled on September 23 after having broadcast 223 installments of the 233 recorded, so the public channel would have 10 programs to search for the definitive replacement of La Plaza, which suggests that probably after these 10 installments repeats of The Wild Card.
La 1’s bet was to recover the live broadcast of its afternoons with a show that could compete against Y Ahora Sonsoles and TardeAR. To do this, they counted on Jordi González, the presenter who improved the audience data for Lazos de sangre, taking advantage of the good data from La Promesa, the leading afternoon series. However, it could not be.
Since the premiere, the situation at La Plaza did not look very good, failing to meet expectations. It scored a 7.8% screen share compared to 12% for Sonsoles Ónega and 10% for Ana Rosa Quintana. In a matter of a week, audiences have been falling more and more until reaching their historic low this Tuesday with a more than worrying 5.4% and 378,000 viewers.
La Plaza, waiting for the last broadcast this Friday, has achieved an average of 6.6% share and 454,000 viewers in its eight programs broadcast. Data that is far from the objective of La 1 and the average of the chain, which is currently 10.5%. In fact, the public channel seeks to consolidate the second place achieved after surpassing Telecinco in the month of July as the second most watched channel in Spain, largely thanks to the success of La Promesa.
Furthermore, these bad data were affecting one of the network’s star programs, El Cazador, which since the first broadcast of La Plaza, on September 27, has experienced an audience leak caused by the low data of Jordi’s program. Gonzalez.
La Plaza was born from an agreement reached this summer between the UGT and SI unions with the interim president of RTVE, Elena Sánchez, and the Intercenter Committee to promote internal production in the Public Corporation. At the moment, it is not known what will happen with the program and the 70 deliveries to which RTVE committed for a total of 2,014,000 euros, of which 1,397,000 euros correspond to internal resources of the chain.
As this newspaper has learned, the intention of the public channel, as happened at the time with the program Let’s get along, is not to cancel it definitively but to “transform” it so that it can fit in another place on the grid where it can work better and The competition is not so tough.
Among the signings that La Plaza had were names like Terelu Campos, Mariló Montero, Norma Duval, Judit Mascó, Inés Hernand, who returned to RTVE after the controversy over her political allegation, Celia Villalobos, collaborator on Jorge Javier’s program Vázquez also canceled by Telecinco, Mar Saura, Mabel Lozano, Juncal Rivero, Marta Robles, Samanta Villar, Cristina Fernández, Silvia Tarragona, Ana Bernal-Triviño, who rose to fame with the docuseries of Rocío Carrasco, Marta Nebot and Susana Uribarri, among other.
