Fremantle, a TV giant, has acquired the worldwide rights to the coming-of-age indie drama series “Penelope,” produced by Duplass Brothers Productions, known for shows like “Somebody Somewhere” and “Room 104.”

The 8-part series, created by Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn, made its debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in the U.S. on September 24th.

“Penelope” revolves around the story of a 16-year-old girl named Penelope, portrayed by Megan Stott, who feels like she doesn’t belong in modern society. She finds herself drawn to the unknown wilderness, where she starts to build a new life for herself in a National Forest. The cast also includes actors like Austin Abrams, Krisha Fairchild, and Rhenzy Feliz.

Rebecca Dundon, Fremantle’s senior vice president of scripted content, expressed her excitement about partnering with the Duplass Brothers to introduce “Penelope.” She highlighted the series’ emotional depth, high production values, and its exploration of relevant issues that resonate with audiences worldwide.
